Every Allen ISD student in Pre-K through eighth grade now gets a dedicated day at the district's STEAM Center as part of a daily rotation for the 2026-27 school year.

Each school day, a different grade level from a different campus travels to the facility for hands-on lessons in science, technology, engineering, art and math, according to the district. Story Elementary sixth graders were the first group through the door this year.

Every campus gets a turn.

During their visit, Story Elementary students tackled five activities: analyzing local biodiversity through an outdoor grid inventory, creating nature art inspired by sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, coding drones through a "Candyland" navigation challenge, building custom light structures with SAM Labs kits and constructing Rube Goldberg chain reaction devices.

The rotation gives every Pre-K through eighth grade student a guaranteed visit, regardless of whether they sign up for extracurriculars or summer programs.

Beyond summer camps

The STEAM Center has hosted targeted programs before. In June, more than 60 seventh- through ninth-graders attended a four-day robotics camp there, sponsored by the Lowery Freshman Center's Aspire Robotics Club. The facility also drew more than 500 guests for Allen ISD's spring 2026 Community Engagement Night.

The daily rotation expands that reach to every younger student in the district on a recurring basis throughout the school year.

Bond-funded momentum

The expansion comes as Allen ISD rides momentum from its 2024 bond program. Voters approved Proposition A ($419 million for campus security, capital improvements and transportation) with 56% support and Proposition C ($23 million for classroom technology) with 53%. As we reported Aug. 20, Anderson Early Childhood School, Cheatham Elementary and Curtis Middle School all reopened this month after bond-funded renovations.

The STEAM Center rotation operates on a separate track from those building projects, focusing on curriculum delivery rather than facilities.

Allen ISD has not published a public schedule showing which campus visits on which day. The rotation continues throughout the 2026-27 school year.
