More than 40 organizations will set up inside the Allen Senior Recreation Center offering Collin County's 43,000-plus veterans a chance to file disability claims, ask about education benefits and connect with mental health resources at no cost.

On July 25, the Collin County Veterans Expo runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 451 Saint Mary Drive. The Texas Veterans Land Board, a division of the Texas General Land Office, is organizing the event, according to the expo's Eventbrite listing.

What's available

Veterans, active-duty service members and their families can access:

  • VA disability claims assistance through a first-come, first-served claims clinic. If staff run out of time, attendees will be scheduled for a follow-up appointment, the Texas Veterans Land Board said in the event's FAQ.
  • Education benefits guidance, including the GI Bill and the Hazlewood Act, which covers tuition at Texas public colleges for eligible veterans and dependents.
  • Mental health resources and senior care referrals
  • Employment opportunities from businesses hiring at the expo

The Texas Veterans Commission, which provides free claims assistance through accredited advisors statewide, is listed among the expo's participating organizations, according to the Allen American's July 14 report.

Why it matters locally

More than 43,000 veterans live in Collin County, according to the Allen American. For many, navigating the VA benefits system means driving to a regional office or waiting weeks for an appointment.

Admission is free. Food will be provided by Texas Credit Union and served until it runs out.

No registration is required, but the claims clinic operates first-come, first-served. The event is open to all ages.

  • Through Friday, July 31 — Allen Trails Master Plan Update survey open on the city's website. The Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with Halff Associates to update the plan, last revised in 2019.
