Five Allen events pack Friday and Friday, Sept. 11-12, starting with a free concert honoring the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Free 9/11 tribute concert
The Allen Community Band performs a free musical tribute at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Allen Public Library, 300 N. Allen Drive.
The program features patriotic selections and pieces composed for the Sept. 11 remembrance, including "A Hymn for the Lost and the Living" by Eric Ewazen and the two-movement work "9-11: Voices Echo," according to Community Impact Newspaper.
Award-winning journalist William Luther, who was in New York City covering the attacks, will share his recollections, according to the event listing on AllEvents.
VFW Post 2195 will present the colors, and the Allen Quilters Guild will display patriotic quilts. The concert will also stream live on ACTV.
Farmers market at The Village at Allen
The Market at The Village at Allen returns to The Grove, 190 E. Stacy Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.
Vendors will offer fresh produce and handmade goods from local artisans. The event is family-friendly and dogs are welcome.
Admission is free.
Guns & Hoses Boxing Tournament
North Texas police officers and firefighters step into the ring at the 25th annual Guns & Hoses Boxing Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center, 200 E. Stacy Road, Ste.
1350. Tickets are $40. Proceeds benefit the Allen-based Guns & Hoses Foundation of North Texas, which assists families of first responders.
Three Garland Police Department officers are among the fighters on the card, Hoodline reported.
Live music at Watters Creek
Local band Radio Edit plays rock, pop and country hits from the 1960s through contemporary chart toppers at Watters Creek Village, 970 Garden Park Drive, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12.
Admission is free. Guests can buy food and drinks from surrounding restaurants. Outside food, beverages and coolers are not allowed, according to the City of Allen community calendar.
Bear statue name reveal at Bravo Park
Jeanie Schulmeister reads two bear-themed books at Bravo Park at Sloan Corners, 785 Bravo Park Drive, from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. Attendees will hear the official name of the park's Reading Bear statue. The name was chosen through a community contest run in partnership with the Allen Public Library, which collected submissions through Aug. 31, according to the Sloan Corners website. Admission is free.
