Collin College dedicated a renovated student services center at its Plano Campus to Fred N. Moses, the first African American elected to the college's Board of Trustees.
At a Friday, Sept. 25, ceremony, college leaders, Moses family members and community guests gathered to unveil the Fred N. Moses Student Services Center, according to Collin College. Moses served on the board from 2017 to 2023 and on the Collin College Foundation Board from 2017 to 2025, according to the college.
Moses died in early 2025.
"My father believed in the power of education. He understood that college is more than classrooms and buildings," his daughter, Michelle Moses Meeks, said at the ceremony. "It is a place where lives are changed, dreams are developed, doors are opened, and future leaders are prepared to serve their community."
Collin College District President Dr. Neil Matkin said the naming honors Moses' contributions to the college "and his impact well beyond his passing." Matkin called him "a beloved family and community leader who touched many people."
Moses and his late wife, Mazzie, established an endowment at Collin College in May 2004 to fund annual student scholarships. The college recognized them as Living Legends in 2006.
Beyond the campus, Moses built a long record in Plano civic life. He and Mazzie founded Telecom Electric Supply Co. in 1985 using their own savings. He served as the first Black chair of the Plano Chamber of Commerce and founded the Plano Community Forum. He also held leadership roles with the Plano Economic Development Board and Plano Community Home.
Moses established the Fred Moses Minority Business Award, an annual honor given through the Plano Chamber. In 2008, he became the first Black precinct chair and chair of the Collin County Republican Party. In 2019, he was inducted into the Minority Business Hall of Fame and Museum.
The dedication is the second campus naming Collin College has held in recent days. As we reported Saturday, Sept. 26, the college named its Wylie Campus veterinary technology labs after Dr. Lorraine Chalkley on Sept. 21.
The endowment Moses and Mazzie created in 2004 continues to provide scholarships to Collin College students each year.
