Allen's defense and a pair of sophomores dismantled four-time state champion DeSoto 50-6 on Friday, Sept. 4, at Eagle Stadium, pushing the Eagles to 2-0.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray watched from the sidelines during the first half, according to the Dallas Morning News. It was Murray's first visit to Eagle Stadium since 2021. The former Allen star went 42-0 as a starting quarterback from 2012 to 2014, leading the Eagles to three consecutive state titles before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The current Eagles gave him plenty to watch. Sophomore quarterback Ty Snell completed four touchdown passes on just seven attempts, finishing with 169 yards. Sophomore wide receiver Zach Williams had four catches for 99 yards and three of those scores.
Allen led 7-0 after the first quarter when Snell connected with wide receiver Grant Abercrombie for the game's opening touchdown, according to the Eagle Angle. The offense piled on in the second quarter. Running back KP Jackson scored from the 6-yard line, Lyndon Spriggs rushed in a touchdown from the 4, and Williams caught a scoring pass to make it 28-0 at halftime.
The third quarter was worse for DeSoto. Snell found Williams twice more for touchdowns, and Spriggs returned a kick 76 yards for a score. Allen led 50-0 heading into the fourth.
DeSoto's lone score came with 3:18 left, when quarterback Jayden Shaw rushed 26 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed. Allen had already pulled its starters by then.
The defense was just as dominant. Senior defensive back Jeremiah Storey picked off two passes. The unit recorded 13 tackles for loss and five sacks. DeSoto's four-star running back SaRod Baker, a Texas Tech pledge, gained 97 yards in the first quarter but was bottled up the rest of the night.
Both teams finished with 271 total yards, but Allen needed just seven first downs to DeSoto's 19.
Head coach Lee Wiginton kept the mood measured after the game. "We're in non-district football. We played two good, non-district football games," he said. "There's a whole lot of teams that are 0-2 right now that could finish 14-2 and win a state championship. We're a team that's 2-0 right now, could finish 2-8 and be done at the end of the regular season."
Allen, ranked 10th nationally by MaxPreps and fifth in Class 6A, has now beaten two state powers in consecutive weeks after topping Duncanville 26-7 on Aug. 28.
DeSoto dropped to 0-2 after also losing to St. Thomas Aquinas of Florida, ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps, in Week 1. DeSoto moved down to the 5A Division I classification this year following the UIL's biennial realignment.
Allen's Week 3 opponent is eight-time state champion Southlake Carroll.
