What the commission handled July 7

At its most recent session on Tuesday, July 7, the commission voted 5-1 to recommend a zoning change for nearly 6 acres east of Central Expressway and southwest of Allen Drive. The proposal, called Townhomes of Allen Uptown, would replace land zoned for shopping center uses with 41 townhomes, a 5,000-square-foot dog park, about 1.5 acres of open space, public parallel parking along Allen Drive, and a 10-foot-wide trail.

Senior Planner Kim Yockey told commissioners at the July 7 hearing that the site's unusual shape makes it unsuitable for commercial development and that the project's density of 6.9 dwelling units per acre sits well below Allen's 10.8-unit maximum for townhomes.

Allen resident Jeremy Weatherall raised traffic concerns during the public hearing, telling commissioners on July 7 that increased traffic near a roundabout worried his neighborhood.

That zoning change now heads to Allen City Council for final action on Tuesday, July 28. Residents who want to comment on the townhome proposal can attend that council session.
