Allen ISD families weighing college-credit options for their high schoolers have a detailed district guide breaking down costs, timelines and eligibility for dual credit courses through Collin College.
The guide, published on the district's website, walks families through three main paths: general dual credit courses for juniors and seniors, the Associate Degree Pathway (ADP) that begins as early as ninth grade, and workforce programs in health science, automotive technology and computer-aided drafting and design.
What it costs
The guide uses $65 per credit hour as an example tuition rate, plus a $2 student life activity fee per credit hour and a $2 student record fee each semester.
Under those example rates, a three-credit-hour course runs about $203.
The district advises families to confirm current rates before budgeting. Students also pay for books and materials, including the Cougar Book Bundle.
Families whose students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program may be eligible for a tuition waiver, though the waiver does not cover books and materials.
The associate degree pathway
The ADP lets students begin Collin College coursework in ninth or 10th grade and potentially earn an associate degree by graduation. More than 30 Allen High School seniors were recognized for completing their associate degrees at a ceremony at the Performing Arts Center, according to the district.
Admission requires passing the English language arts, reading and essay portions of the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA). That means families need to start exploring eligibility while a student is still in eighth or ninth grade.
Grades earned in those early college courses land on both the high school transcript and a permanent college transcript. The guide notes that an associate degree does not guarantee every course will transfer toward a university major. Families should check transfer policies at their target schools.
GPA weighting and AP/IB differences
One detail likely to matter at course-selection time: dual credit courses carry a 4.5 GPA scale, while Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses use a 5.0 scale. For dual credit, a grade of C or higher is the benchmark for transfer-eligible credit. AP and IB credit depends on exam scores, and policies vary by university.
Students can mix dual credit, AP, IB and on-level classes across subjects.
Workforce tracks
Health science options include certified nurse aide, patient care technician, medical scribe, physical therapy aide and emergency medical technician. EMT applicants must turn 18 by April 1 of their senior year. Health science programs require a separate Collin College application on top of the Allen High School dual credit enrollment.
Automotive technology is a one-year program for 11th or 12th graders. Entry in 12th grade is recommended for students who plan to continue at Collin College to complete a two-year program. Computer-aided drafting and design is a two-year program starting in 11th grade. Seats are limited because the programs serve multiple school districts, and Collin College makes final acceptance decisions.
Health science and workforce programs can meet four to five days a week, which may affect extracurricular participation. Students in health science must arrange their own transportation to clinical sites; the district shuttle does not cover those trips.
Scheduling and logistics
Most dual credit classes meet at the Collin College Technical Campus. Allen ISD provides shuttle transportation between Allen High School and the campus. Ninth graders in the ADP take courses at Lowery Freshman Center before shifting to the high school and technical campus in 10th grade.
Dual credit courses follow college-level expectations. The guide describes no late work and no opportunity to redo an assignment simply to raise a grade to 70.
How to start
The enrollment window described in the guide runs from November through February, though the district advises families to confirm the schedule for their enrollment year. College readiness can be demonstrated through the TSIA, SAT or ACT. The district notes that PSAT eligibility rules were under review at the time of publication.
Families can reach dual credit advisors through the Allen High School College and Career Center or the dual credit office at the Collin College Technical Campus.
